All you need to know about Clay Roof Tiles

Italcotto’s range of clay roof tiles are manufactured in Possagno, Northern Italy.

The high quality clay found there is rich in iron content creating a resistant, impermeable clay which is a deep red colour.

Clay roofing is one of the oldest traditional roof coverings and is known for its inherent qualities including thermal and overall strength. Clay roof tiles have been used for centuries in Europe covering most of the old traditional building we so fondly know.

Our range of Portoguese,  Marseilles and Unicoppo profiles represent the natural development of clay roof tile production, taking art to a new level, inspired by tradition, but produced according to the highest standards of advanced technology.

The demands of the construction industry are becoming ever more diversified, with trends towards aesthetic effects that range from the very modern to the deeply traditional.

The Unicoppo profile combines the aesthetic characteristics of the classic bent tile with the technical capacities of the flat tile. This new product accompanies our traditional lines of Portuguese and Marseilles, all available in a wide variety of shades and clay mixtures: the traditional line, in the classic terracotta shades of red, pink and pale and  the antichizzato line, a range of elegantly mottled colours.

From all the different profiles of clay roof tiles available, the classic Coppo tile stands out as the most traditional. Not only are they an ideal solution for architecturally important or historical buildings, they also form the elements that allows them to be adapted to the most complex of roof designs due the flexibility of their range of overlap.

Technical Characteristics

Water Absorption – Immersion of these tiles in water for 24 hours results in water absorption of between 6 – 8 %.

Durability – Resistant to salt attack and are therefore suitable for coastal areas. They also resist frost attack making them suitable for colder regions.

Permeability – Low water permeability and are therefore suitable for areas of heavy rainfall and tropical climates.

Size Variation – Although the products are manufactured to the highest control levels, natural raw materials may vary in consistency causing differential shrinkage rates. It is important that each batch being supplied is checked for size before installation, and that the batten centres are placed to suit the tile.
